Horse Racing: Padding Your Bankroll at Aqueduct

Bookmark and Share by Michael Dempsey

We are less than two months from the Kentucky Derby, with plenty of Derby preps still to be run.

This coming Saturday we will get to wager on the Rebel Stakes (G2) from Oaklawn Park, the San Felipe Stakes over the Pro Ride at Santa Anita (G2), and the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) from Tampa Bay Downs.

Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is in the books, with the “field” the 3/1 favorite. The favorite among the 23 single horse racing betting interests was Eskendereya at 5/1.

With just 24 betting interests available, it is difficult to find value, and if your Derby horse is flying under the radar, you can’t get a price.

Unless you wager offshore with a racebook like BetUS, which has more than 60 three year olds listed.

I like Awesome Act, the Gotham Stakes winner, who was not listed among the top 23 betting interests in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager offered by Churchill Downs, and was lumped into the “field” at 3/1.

However, I can get him at +2000 at BetUS, meaning a $20 wager on the colt would return a hefty $400 if he wins the Derby.

Other horses to think about at BetUS are Dublin (+1500) and Conveyance (+2500). There are plenty of other promising three year olds at generous prices.

In order to pay for a few future bets and this weekend’s stakes action, I plan on padding my bankroll with a few plays at Aqueduct:

Today's Play of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 3 Clm $7,500 (1:58 ET)
#7 Fourth Chapter 6/1
#6 Tiffany Rock 5/1
#3 Good Will 2/1
#5 Sun Shower 7/2

Analysis: #7 Fourth Chapter drops a notch in class after getting a wide trip last out for a $10K tag over an inside speed favoring racing strip. Two and three back this gal was off a step slow, and I like the jock switch here from Saez to Cohen. She is going to need to see some pace in front of her here and looks as if she should get it.

#6 Tiffany Rock figures to be a pace player here on the stretch out from six furlongs. Last out she finished up well for third after racing in traffic in the early going. She has enough pedigree to handle two turns and has only been long once, a seventh place finish at Monmouth Park last fall.

Wagering
WIN: #7 to win at 7/2 or better.
EX: 6,7 / 3,5,6,7
TRI: 6,7 / 3,5,6,7 / 3,4,5,6,7

Today’s Pick 3 Play from Aqueduct:

Starting in Race 7: $1: 4,8 / 2,3,7 / 1,2,9,10 = $24

AQU Race 7 Md $50,000 (3:55 ET)
#8 Full Tilt Noogie, #4 It's the Big Cat

#8 Full Tilt Noogie stalked the early pace from the inside and could not catch eh gate to wire winner, who was taking full advantage of a strong inside speed bias that day. The blinkers come off today for his second start since shipping in from Tampa. The Barker barn has been sending out live runners at the meet and has been wining with some prices.

#4 It's the Big Cat dueled for the early lead and weakened to finish third last out, beaten two lengths for the top spot. The winner of the race was Dixie Nite Out, who beat state bred Alw-1 foes in his next start on Feb. 25. The drop in for a tag seems to have woken this guy up, who was beaten by a combined 44 lengths in his two previous starts against maiden special weight company.

AQU Race 8 Alw $43,000N1X (4:25 et)
#2 Spell Check, #7 Ampart Ridge, #3 Gold Record

#2 Spell Check came off nearly a year layoff to post her maiden win in a good looking effort. She had finished in the runner up spot in six of her first eight career starts before hitting the sidelines. She obviously has matured, and I am looking for her to move forward off her maiden win and has a good shot of winning right back here in her first try against winners.

#7 Ampart Ridge set the early fractions and battled on gamely in the stretch, coming up a nose shy at the wire. The third place finisher in the race was Dancing Daisy, who came back to beat state bred Alw-2 optional claimers in her next start on Mar. 4. She owns a solid pace profile throughout with the edge in early and mid pace numbers. The cut back to a mile should suit.

AQU Race 9 Md $16,000 (4:55 et)
#2 Gold Cup Kid, #10 Omega Cipher, #1 Citizen Bailey, #9 Brynnie's Mr. Smee

#2 Gold Cup Kid was the beaten fav last out in a fifth place finish versus $20K maidens. Two back at this tag the ridgling made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot, earning a fig good enough to beat this group easily. He has taken a rather quick plunge in class since his debut last fall, but looks like he should be able to handle this group, and the 5/1 ML looks fair enough.

#10 Omega Cipher showed some early zip before fading badly to finish a well beaten eighth in his debut. He caught a muddy surface in that outing and I'll give him another look here on a fast track with the big price drop. The gelding has two sibs that are winners, top earner 3 for 7 Unbridled Ambiance ($52K).

Price Plays From Aqueduct:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.

R6: #3 Digger Karakorum 10/1
R6: #8 Fortunate Run 12/1
R7: #6 Centripital 12/1
R9: #10 Omega Cipher 12/1

Good luck padding your bankroll today!
