Padding Your Bankroll for Wednesday October 15

Bookmark and Share by Michael Dempsey

National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.

With Monday a holiday, today’s racing schedule is on the light side. There is no racing at Belmont Park, but there is a solid nine race card at Keeneland.

We will attempt to pad our bankroll today with a modest $24 investment in the late Pick 3 and we can knock down a decent exacta and trifecta payoff in today’s Play of the Day:

Today's Play of the Day from Keeneland:

KEE Race 3 Clm $50,000 (2:10 et)

#4 Casino Kay 4/1

#5 Miss Shangai 6/1

#8 Royale Michele 5/1

#2 Talk Fast 5/1

Analysis: #4 Casino Kay was a sharp winner last out o the poly at Turfway against Alw-1 foes in her first start for the Maker barn off the claim. All three of her career wins have come on synthetic surfaces and she beat older last out and is in for a tag and facing straight three year olds here. Maker is very good with recent claims and appears to have found a great spot for her here.

#5 Miss Shangai makes her first start since an impressive maiden score at Calder versus $40K maiden claimers, drawing clear to win by 6 1/2 lengths. She earned the top last out speed fig in the effort. She was coming off a four-month break in her maiden score. She is in a sharp barn with Ward and in just her fifth career start and first on poly, she still has the look of a filly that still has some upside potential.

Wagering

WIN: #4 to win at 3/1 or better.

EX: 4,5 / 2,4,5,8

TRI: 4,5 / 1,4,5,8 / 1,4,5,8,10,11

Today’s Late Pick 3 Play from Keeneland:

Starting in Race 7: $1: 2,4,5,9 / 1,4,10 / 5,6 = $24

KEE Race 7 Md Sp Wt (4:10 et)

#5 Buzzin and Dreamin, #2 Uno Mas, #9 Stargleam, #4 Indygo Mountain

#5 Buzzin and Dreamin raced down along the inside in the early going, was steadied and had to alter course to the outside in the stretch and finished well for a close up fourth at the Spa last out, beaten 3/4 of a length for the top spot. The runner up and seventh place finisher in the race came back to graduate next out. The colt has worked quickly since his last start including a bullet drill over at Churchill.

#2 Uno Mas chased the early pace but could not get to the gate to wire winner last out over the poly at Arlington, settling for the runner up spot while three lengths clear of the third place finisher Willie Bags, who came back to graduate on his next outing on 10/5 at Hawthorne. Two back in his debut the Asmussen runner also finished in the runner up spot in a race that produced a pair of next out winners. The colt is by Macho Uno out of a Regal Classic mare that has dropped two other foals to race, one winner, Mariah's Bullet ($138K). The price may end up on the light side on this guy but he fits well here.

KEE Race 8 Alw $52,000N1X (4:40 et)

#10 Innovative, #4 Banker's Choice, #1 Majestic Feline

#10 Innovative was not a threat last out over the Tapeta at PI in a fifth place finish in her first go against winners. She graduated easily two back at Colonial Downs going five furlongs on the grass. The $250K buy is by Johannesburg out of a Carson City mare, her first foal to race. She figures to move forward with the switch back to the grass and the stretch out to a mile. She is in good hands with the Motion barn that is 26% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from sprint to route.

#4 Banker's Choice was a game maiden winner last out over the poly at Turfway in her first go around two turns. She was fifth in her lone turf try, catching yielding footing at the Spa and she was only beaten 1 1/4 lengths for the top spot. She has two sibs and they have both won on grass.

KEE Race 9 Alw $5,000s (5:10 et)

#6 El Bomba, #5 Boulder Tiger

#6 El Bomba gets the nod here in the finale and there is no doubt he is capable of handling the 1/4 miles. Two back he won at 1 7/8 miles on the turf at River. He has a won over the poly here, and that win was against $7.5K claimers going 1 3/16 miles back in '06. The nine year old has shown he likes poly and is in good hands with high % Greenhill barn.

#5 Boulder Tiger was no match for the winner last out in a runner up finish on the turf at Ky Downs going 1 1/2 miles. Two back was a good third versus $10K foes at Ellis on the turf. The runner up and fifth place finisher in that race were both next out winners. Appears to have enough pedigree to handle the pedigree, by Giant's Causeway out of a Nureyev mare.

Price Plays:

These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
