Weekend Stakes Horse Races from Santa Anita

One of Santa Anita’s biggest days is this Saturday when 4 year olds and older take to the Pro-Ride surface for the Grade I Santa Anita Handicap. Among the horses that have won the ‘Big Cap have been Seabiscuit, Free House, Tiznow and the greatest claimer of all time, Lava Man.

The brilliant Zenyatta won’t be showing up to take on the boys in the ‘Big Cap but another top notch gal, St. Trinians, will. Does she have a shot?

Because 14 horses have signed up for this race, the filly St. Trinians should go off at a decent price. By decent, I mean 3 to 1 or higher makes her an overlay in this. She’s won 4 races in a row, has a turn of foot that could challenge Zenyatta’s, and is ridden by one of the best jockeys in California, Joel Rosario. She’s just an exceptional animal that should handle the boys with ease on Saturday. Things could set up well for the Mike McCarthy Tiger’s Rock. McCarthy, who studied under Todd Pletcher, saddles Tiger’s Rock for the first time. That’s a 27% winning move for McCarthy. Not only that, but Tiger’s Rock is one of the few speed types in here, has won his last two, and has already won at 1 5/8th and 1 ½ miles. He’s got the lungs for this. The terrific Loup Bretton goes turf to Pro-Ride for trainer Julio Canani. He figures to be 1st or 2nd choice in this race because he’s got some serious back class and keeps Garrett Gomez. Canani is 25% with his first time all-weather horses so Bretton can’t be dismissed in this.
