The Santa Anita cushion track.

Santa Anita will be installing a brand new track. Yes, there will be racing during the Oak Tree Meet in September and October, but as far as figuring out which horses are going to do well over the new track the window isn’t going to be very big.

Horse betting fans will need to be on their game, astute as to who has done what on artificial surfaces, who has been training well, etc. before deciding on a winner in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Let’s get to the rankings!

Breeders’ Cup Sprint Power Rankings

1. Street Boss - - online odds + 300 - - Without a doubt Street Boss is the top sprinter on the West Coast. He’s won over Polytrack and cushion track and can come from the clouds. The Boss won’t have to travel which also is an advantage. He’s going to be tough to beat on Breeders’ Cup day and looks like a single in any exotic online wagering tickets at this point. The 3 to 1 odds are absolutely gracious if you believe he stays healthy.

2. Benny the Bull - - online odds + 350 - - Richard Dutrow’s charge will arrive from the East Coast for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. How well will he do? There’s no telling as he will have no real cushion track form. He does have a nice closing kick and because of that he will get a lot of play, but the lofty speed ratings he’s been getting on dirt won’t mean anything on the Santa Anita cushion track. Beware at low online odds.

3. Midnight Lute - - online odds + 400 - - Bob Baffert still keeps his horses saddled at Santa Anita even though the artificial tracks in California have led to a few disappoints for him. He do think the defending champ has a shot, but with Street Boss willing to go twelve wide and still beat horses, Midnight Lute is going to have to have luck to win this.

4. Bustin’ Stones - - online odds + 2500 - - Sure he’s a speed horse in a race traditionally loaded with speed. Yes, he’s never run over an artificial surface, but this guy has some serious guts. I think he’s got a chance at a square price.

5. Surf Cat - - online odds + 2000 - - If Bruce Headley, who trains this guy as well as training Street Boss, does what’s right for the horse. Surf Cat will show up in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and not some crazy thing like the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile which won’t even be run over dirt. The Cat is still one of the most talented horses out here on the West Coast and he could pop at very nice odds.

6. Thor’s Echo - - online odds + 4000 - - The 2006 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner ran horribly in his first race of the year. That’s okay. There’s time for him to peak at exactly the right moment. He deserves a long look on the horse racing page because he’s a past winner who has the right connections and will be closing into what should be a fast pace
