Horse Pick of the Day:  Woodbine – Race 8

Race-day:  11/11/2009
Race-time:  10:13 pm EST

Racing in Canada continue on Wednesday night when horses take the Woodbine racetrack.

There is a stakes race on the card, but for betting purposes, the last race, an $8,000 claimer, figures to offer serious value on some good horses.  It’s a wide open affair that should provide horseplayers with plenty of opportunity to make profits.

Let’s take a look at Race 8 at Woodbine on Wednesday night:

Woodbine – Race 8

Claiming $8,000

For Three Year Olds and Upward

7 furlongs on Polytrack.

Working Man Blues - - 6/1 morning line odds

There isn’t a whole lot of speed in this race which is one of the reasons that front-runner Working Man Blues might be able to steal this race on the lead.  The four year old gelding goes from 1 1/16th miles to this 7 furlong distance race and should be able to get at least a 3 length lead going into the turn.  If the closers don’t catch up to him, then he has a good shot of keeping it going.  Working Man Blues is also changing barns to Stuart Simon who is 27% first time out with his new starters.

Changing Lover - - 15/1 morning line odds

The Steven Chircop trainee has a 1-3-2 record out of 8 starts at this 7 furlong distance.  That’s not bad for this level.  Not only that, but two races ago he finished 3rd at the $20,000 level going 7 furlongs with Emile Ramsammy up.  Ramsammy takes the call in this race, it’s at 7 furlongs, and it’s at a much easier level than $20,000.  Does he have a shot?  He’s got a huge shot.  He might have enough speed to keep Working Man Blues within striking distance as well.

Ballen Isle - - 3/1 morning line odds

Patrick Husbands took the call the last time this horse ran and look what happened.  It won.  Now, Husbands takes the call again and, if anything, Ballen Isle should be more effective at this 7 furlong distance than he was in his last at 6 furlongs.  Every time Husbands gets on board, this guy runs well.  He should do so again in this race, but the odds will be low and this field is tough.

Wagering Strategy

Working Man Blues has a chance to steal this race on the lead.  I will bet him to win and place.  I will make a smaller wager on Changing Lover to win and place.  I will bet an exacta and trifecta box with Ballen Isle, Changing Lover and working Man Blues.
