Breeders’ Cup Wagering - Grey Goose Breeders’ Cupuvenile Turf

Bittel Road should go off the favorite in this because he is undefeated in three lifetime starts. For online racebook fans, a bet on Bittel Road could be like throwing money at a fan and watching it blow into a shredder. I mean, seriously, the colt will have to go about ten wide in order to win this.

I wrote an article recently decrying the chances of not only Bittel Road but the horse that I chose on top in this. Hey, learning to eat crow is important if you expect to be successful at this game of horse betting!

Let’s get to it!

Race-day: 10/25/2008

Santa Anita - - Race 6

Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

$1,000,000

For Colts and Geldings Two Years Old

1 mile on turf

Skipadate - - 7/2 fair online odds

Not only am I eating crow about Skiadate’s chances to win this race, I’m also making him a somewhat short-priced fair online odds bet in this. Why? Because he looked sensational when finishing second to Grand Adventure in his last race. He’s easily one of the fastest horses in this and could lay off the pace like Bittel Road while Grand Adventure will need to run closer. He’s out of Skip Away which means that, well, he’s a cheapy, but cheapies can do well when they’re two years old. I think he’s going to be difficult to beat in this race.

Grand Adventure - - 4/1 fair online odds

Like Bittel Road, this son of Grand Slam is undefeated. What’s very impressive is how he swung out and went seven wide around the final turn in his last race. Then, he took the lead over Skipadate and battled that one to the finish line. The same sort of thing could happen in this race because Grand Adventure is obviously a tough son of a gun. I like to him to prove a tough customer in the lane in this.

Westphalia - - 4/1 fair online odds

Another Breeders’ Cup turf race means another Aidan O’Brien contender. This two year old has already won a Grade II over in Europe and will come into this as one of the favorites. He’s definitely classy, his sire Danehill is one of the top sires in Europe, and O’Brien doesn’t send horses over to the States unless he really thinks he can win. The lone knock on him is that his price is going to be very short and that this is a race for two year olds on the turf. That makes him a tough horse for me to really like. Who knows? Maybe he goes off at 4 to 1 and I can put an online win bet on him.

Bittel Road - - 8/1 fair online odds

Yes, he’s undefeated. Yes, visually he looked ultra-impressive in his last race, but after breaking it down, I can’t recommend this guy at what figures to be a short price. He beat Skipadate two races ago and has every right to improve, but he’s a dead closer in a big field on a turf course that will favor front-runners and pressers. I can’t go with him in this. Trainer Todd Pletcher will put J. R. Velasquez on him. That means his odds sky dive right before they get to the gate.
