Horse Pick from Mountaineer Racetrack - Only 6 in the Field

Bookmark and Share by D.S. Williamson

Often times value is found in races where it’s least expected. Such is the case with Race 9 at Moutaineer on Tuesday night.

There are only 6 entrants in Race 9 at Mountaineer on Tuesday night and most of them will be going off as underlays. The reason is that out of the six, four are dropping in class.

The one horse that is actually going up in class is our pick of the day in the BetUS sportsbook because it’s also the only horse that is in really good form.

Let’s analyze Race 9 at Mountaineer Racetrack on Tuesday night.

Mountaineer Racetrack – Race 9

Claiming $15,000 n4L

For Three Year Olds and Upward Which Have Never Won Four Horse Races

5 ½ furlongs on dirt

Lastraw - - 6/2 morning line odds

Lastraw made a belated 6 wide move around the final turn in his last race, a $5,000 Allowance, before losing by only a single length to finish third. He was placed second due to a disqualification and now finds himself in a much tougher $15,000 n4L against some serious droppers. Does he have a shot? Yes, he has a big shot because the droppers all ran terribly in their last races while Lastraw actually ran very well. If he can build upon that finish at all, he can win this.

Mr. Flamboyant - - 5/2 morning line odds

Mr. Flamboyant is one of those droppers. In the $30,000 n3L race he ran in last time, he did well enough to finish 4th. That was at 6 furlongs. At 5 ½ he might have done well enough to win. Mr. Flamboyant has had some physical issues since there are numerous gaps between his starts, but he is definitely talented enough to beat this field.

Generalissimo - - 3/1 morning line odds

He looked horrible in his last two races, but drops to a level where he no doubt should show much more. Gernalissimo will be sitting in the catbird seat on the backstretch as both Huge City, the morning line chalk, and Mr. Flamboyant should be fighting each other for the lead. If Mr. Flamboyant runs Huge City into the ground, which should happen, Generalissimo will be ready to pounce. Holding off Lastraw is going to be tough to do.

Wagering Strategy

At morning line odds of 6 to 1, Lastraw looks like a definite bet to win and place. I will put Lastraw, Generalissimo and Mr. Flamboyant in an exacta and trifecta box.
