Horse Pick of the Day: Santa Anita Race 7

Bookmark and Share by D.S. Williamson

Santa Anita will continue with their lucky sunshine only policy this week on Thursday. That’s good news for horseplayers who should be able to find an overlay or two or three in Race 7 on Santa Anita’s Thursday card.

The race, an optional claiming $80,000 at 1 1/16th miles over the Pro-Ride surface, will showcase some up and coming fillies in Southern California. Horse betting players may never get the type of odds on some of these horses that they figure to get in Race 7 on Thursday.

Sister Dawn - - 5/2 morning Horse Racing Betting Trends

Take the short odds on this daughter of Indian Charlie. Trainer John Sadler stretches her out after a fantastic victory in her maiden race going 5 ½ furlongs. In that 5 ½ furlong race, Sister Dawn pulled, waited at the quarter pole and then flew to the finish line while going 3 wide. It was an exceptional race first time out. If Sister Dawn improves even just a bit, then she should easily handle this field. Jockey Rafael Bejarano is as good as any jock on the grounds. All of the signs point to Sister Dawn running fantastic in Race 7 on Thursday.

Paleo - - 6/1 morning line odds

This will be Paleo’s third race in the United States after running at Doncaster and Newmarket in Great Britain. Paleo loses her jockey to Sister Dawn but Tyler Baze is no slouch. He’ll make sure that Paleo is in a good position throughout. The key regarding Paleo is whether or not she has improved from that last race. If she has, then she can definitely win this as there is more than enough speed to set up her tracking, late surge to the wire style. If she hasn’t improved, then she’s toast because this is a competitive field after Sister Dawn.

Harissa - - 3/1 morning line odds

The daughter of Afleet Alex is good enough to win this should Sister Dawn fall flat on her face, but for every positive, like the fact that she is 1 and 1 out of 3 races at the distance and 1-1-1 out of 4 races on artificial surfaces, there is a negative. For instance, Harissa has a run well, blow it, run well, blow it style. She ran well in her last. That means she’s probably going to blow it on Thursday. She also has an issue in the sense that she’ll be doing most of the work in regards to keeping front-runner Ellafitz occupied. Trying to hold off Sister Dawn and Paleo in the lane won’t be easy.

Wagering Strategy

Sister Dawn looks like one of the likeliest winners on Thursday’s card. I will bet Sister Dawn to win. I will also key Sister Dawn in an exacta over both Harissa and Paleo. I will play a trifecta with Sister Dawn in the 1st slot over a box made up of Harissa, Paleo and speedster Ellafitz.
