Horse Pick of the Day: Santa Anita Race 8 the Grade II San Luis Rey Handicap
The Grade II San Luis Rey Handicap usually comes up with a tough field of older turf horses looking to take down part of a nice prize.
This Saturday’s Grade II San Luis Rey Handicap is no different. Turf racing at Santa Anita has been exceptional this meet, when the rains haven’t hit, so I suspect that finding an overlay in the San Luis Rey won’t be difficult.

Bourbon Bay - - 3/1 fair Horse racing betting odds
Trainer Neil Drysdale and jockey Rafael Bejarano are back with the son of Sligo Bay who won the Grade II San Luis Obispo in his last race. Bourbon Bay will probably go off as the second choice in this to High Court Drama. So, he qualifies as an overlay in my opinion at 3 to 1 or higher. Bourbon Bay tracked the pace-setter and then took off at the top of the stretch in the San Luis Obispo. Bejarano is going to have to use different tactics in this as no doubt the pace will be faster, but I don’t think it will matter. Bourbon Bay is undefeated at 1 ½ miles. He should win the San Luis Rey Handicap.
High Court Drama - - 3/1 fair Horse racing betting odds
The Doug O’Neil trained High Court Drama hasn’t finished worse than 2nd in 4 straight races in the U.S. His 2nd place finish in the Grade II San Marcos in his last was exceptional considering the fact that the horse that beat him, Loup Breton, is considered one of he best if not the best turf horse in Southern California. High Court Drama has ever right to win the San Luis Rey on Saturday and should be bet at odds of 3 to 1 or higher, or at least placed in the exacta with Bourbon Bay.
Unusual Suspect - - 5/1 fair Horse racing betting odds
There is a big drop off after High Court Drama and Bourbon Bay in this race. Unusual Suspect, who finished second to Bourbon Bay by 4 lengths, just isn’t the quality of animal like High Court Drama and Bourbon Bay but he could pull an upset on Saturday and has a long shot’s chance of doing so. Trainer Barry Abrams has been known to pull a rabbit out of his hat once in a while. Maybe, Unusual Suspect pulls off a shocker on Saturday.
Wagering Strategy
I like Bourbon Bay and will bet the horse to win only. I will play an exacta box with Bourbon Bay and High Court Drama. I will key Bourbon Bay in an exacta over Unusual Suspect for less.
