Padding Your Bankroll on Thursday September 11
by BetUS Staff

National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.
We might not get much of a price, but Coronation Day looks like he will earn his diploma today in our featured race of the day.
The second time starter from the George Weaver barn adds blinkers, has a good turf pedigree, and should help us pad our bankroll.
The Late Pick 3 has some potential as well. We go four deep in the opening leg hoping to get a decent price. We will invest $24 in the Late Pick 3.
Today's Play of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 4 Md Sp Wt (4:30 et)
#7 Coronation Day 2/1
#1 Paul's Ace / #1a Saratoga Steve 5/2
#3 Show Me the Cash 4/1
#4 Wicked Climb 10/1
Analysis: #7 Coronation Day dueled for the early lead and weakened in the stretch to finish third in his debut. The Weaver barn usually does not have them fully cranked first time out and expecting to see this guy move forward off the effort. Adds blinkers to the mix here and figures to be the one to catch. The gelding has three sibs that are winners, a pair of turf winners, top earner 3 for 9 Stepaside ($146K).
#1a Saratoga Steve has been in the mix in each of his last three starts and adds the hood here. Made a good late rally last out to finish in the runner up spot, 3/4 of a length ahead of our top pick. Entry mate #1 Paul's Ace is a $350K Ocala purchase by Posse out of a Phone Trick mare that has dropped five winners, all on dirt, four earners of over $100K.
Wagering
WIN: #7 to win at 8/5 or better.
EX: 1,7 / 1,3,4,7
TRI: 1,7 / 1,3,4,7 / 1,2,3,4,7
Belmont Park Pick 3 Play:
Starting in Race 7: $1: 2,5,8,10 / 2,6 / 4,8,9 = $24
BEL Race 7 Clm $35,000N2L (4:12 et)
#5 Another Gulch, #10 Counting House, #8 E Z Dollar, #2 Cool Tales
#5 Another Gulch lunged at the start, hit the gate, and never got untracked in a sixth place finish in a highly graded race. Four have come out of the race to run back with a pair of next out winners. Two back over "good" ground the gelding was up on the pace and weakened to finish ninth. Three back this guy missed winning at this condition by just a nose over the turf here after setting the early fractions. Not a ton of early speed in here and moderate early fractions will keep this guy around late.
#10 Counting House exits the same key race as our top pick. The gelding was under a firm hold for a half mile and did not have any punch for the stretch. The gelding broke his maiden going six furlongs on turf in gate to wire fashion. CVel may change tactics with the outside break and we might see this guy on the front along with our top pick.
BEL Race 8 OClm $25,000N2X (4:45 et)
#6 Casey's Tribe, #2 Oniyome
#6 Casey's Tribe split rivals and finished well for a close up third last out after the filly had to steady briefly at the half-mile pole. The winner of the race was Under Serviced, who returned to win the NY bred Schenectady 'Cap on 9/7. She earned a career top two back when she beat Alw-1 state breds in a game effort. The filly owns a solid pace profile throughout and I like the cut back from seven furlongs to six.
#2 Oniyome won at this condition last out and is still eligible here because two back she crossed the wire first against Alw-1 state breds but was DQ'd for ducking in at the 1/8 pole. She beat our top pick three back when running second behind Under Serviced against Alw-1 foes. She is a logical threat here but price is likely going to be on the light side.
BEL Race 9 Md Sp Wt (5:17 et)
#8 Marian B, #9 Afleet Aya, #4 Better Than Swiss
#8 Marian B was not a threat last out in a sixth place finish after racing wide throughout. It was her first go off a seven-moth layoff. She figures to be fitter second off the bench for Iwinski barn. She is by Smokin Mel out of a Polish Numbers mare that has dropped three other foals to race, just one dirt winner. Will likely be overlooked on the tote.
#9 Afleet Aya tries grass for the first time here in her third career start. She was claimed back by Schosberg barn that lost her in her debut. Last out she chased the early pace in a good runner up finish. The third place finisher in the race was Calling My Colors, who beat $35K maiden claimers in her next outing on 8/27.
Price Plays::
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
