Pick 3 of the Day: Starts in Race 6 at Santa Anita

Santa Anita resumes its week of racing on Wednesday with a full 8 race card.
The Pick 3 that I’m gong to play on Wednesday starts in Horse Race 6 and ends in Race 8. I’ll be trying to beat the favorite in all three legs of the Pick 3. That doesn’t mean, though, that I won’t be using the favorite in any of the races.
1st Leg: 6:36 pm EST
Pick 3: Santa Anita Park
Race 6
Optional Claiming $80,000 For Three Year Olds
1 mile on Pro-Ride
Horses Used: 2-Mr. Saturdaynight, 5-Bulldogger, 7-Distorted Dave
Analysis: Mr. Saturdaynight is a John Sadler trainee that just won a $62,500 claimer off the bench going 1 mile. He’s also 2 and 1 out of 3 races over the Pro-Ride. Bulldogger broke his maiden in the slop going 6 furlongs at Saratoga’s summer meet. The morning line chalk gets Garrett Gomez to ride. Distorted Dave failed his first time against winners. He had some issues in that race, namely having to ride the rail, and should be much better in this one. The jockey switch to Joel Rosario means a lot and Dave should get a better set-up in this race than he did in his last.
Race 7
Allowance $56,000 For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Up
1 mile over turf
Horses Used: 2-Restless Soul, 3-Empressive Lady, 6-Meydan Princess
Analysis: In a wide open race with a lot of speed, it makes sense to pick two closers and the horse that makes the most sense in the speed department. Restless Soul is 12 to 1 on the morning line even though he’s 1 and 1 out of 3 races over Santa Anita’s turf course, runs well off of a lay off, and is arguably the best closer in the race. Empressive Lady can either take the lead or rate some behind the speed in this. Jockey Garrett Gomez will make the right choice and trainer Jeff Mullins is having another solid Santa Anita meet. Meydan Princess is the other top closer in this race. She’s coming off of a better than it looks 7th place finish in a grade 2, has run the best speed rating at this distance and over this turf course than any other horse in the race, and could just outclass this bunch.
Race 8
Claiming $10,000 For Four Year Olds and Up
7 furlongs on Pro-Ride
Horses Used: 1-Figeac, 10-No Grande, 12-El Trofeo, 13-Saint Chocolate
Analysis: Figeac just won at the $25,000 n2L claiming level and now drops into this $10,000 level claimer. The horse is going 3rd time for trainer Gary Stute and has run the par for this level. No Grande lost by a head in his last, a 6 furlong race at the $8,000 level, over Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface on February 5th. No Grande could turn the extra furlong of this race into a winning one. El Trofeo drops in class from the $32,000 level. He has a decided class edge over this bunch even though his best races appear to be on turf. Saint Chocolate drops from the $20,000 claiming level, has a victory over the Pro-Ride and has a victory at the 7 furlong distance.
Combinations: 3 x 3 x 4 = 36
$1 Pick 3 = $36
