September 5th Horse Pick of the Day - Belmont Park Race 9

Belmont Park opens its fall meet on Friday with the $75,000 Positive Gal Stakes as the highlight on the card.

The race also happens to be my Horse Pick of the Day, but before I get into that, it’s important to understand that making an online wager on a short-priced horse in any of these minor stakes races at Belmont is sure to deplete any online racebook fan’s bankroll.

Solarana - - 6/1 morning line

This five-year old mare’s first try on the turf actually wasn’t that bad. She finished only 3 ¼ lengths behind the winner. Since then she’s been running on the dirt, but this return to the turf could be to her liking. The key with Solarana is the fact that Alan Garcia, who dominated the recently completed Saratoga meet, takes the call. She can lead or stalk and the online betting odds should be great. She’s got a big shot in this race.

Diamondrella - - 5/2 morning line

She gets the one hole which means she can save ground around the turn or get blocked before making her move. She’s one of the classiest fillies in this race and her record at Belmont is absolutely terrific. The only real knock is that inside post and the online betting odds. Other than that, she’s probably the biggest danger to win this.

Talebetold - - 4/1 morning line

Wire to wire threat gets Edgar Prado who probably could have ridden my top choice if he had wanted to. We need to take that as it is and just assume that Edgar has his own reasons for wanting to ride Talebetold. In any case she’s the only one in this race with a real chance of wiring this field.

Wagering Strategy

If Solarana keeps her 6/1 online betting odds, then with Garcia on her back she’s definitely worth a win and place online bet. I will also use her in exacta and trifecta boxes with Diamondrella and Talebetold.
