Weekend Stakes Race: Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes and Grade II Strub Stakes

The rains may hit California again this weekend, but they shouldn’t hamper Saturday’s day of racing at the Great Race Place too much.
The Grade I Las Virgenes is on the turf, and the field for that race might be affected, but the two more interesting horce racing betting races on Santa Anita’s card, the Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes and the Grade II Strub Stakes, should both go off without a hitch.
Santa Anita – Race 8
Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes
$150,000
For Three Year Olds
1 1/16 th miles on Pro-Ride
7:07 pm EST
The Bob Baffert trained Tiz Chrome figures to battle Caracortado for favoritism in this race, but I’m going to look to American Lion to take home the winner’s share of the purse. American Lion was all out to win the Grade III Hollywood Prevue in his last. This field is tougher, but the Hollywood Prevue victory was in November of 2009. American Lion should have improved in the time between that race and Saturday. Jockey Julien Leparoux is familiar with American Lion having ridden him in his last two races. I’ll give the undefeated Caracortado the nod over Tiz Chrome for the place spot. Caracortado has won on the lead, close to the pace, and going 1 1/16 th miles over Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface. His versatility and experience will help him in this. Tiz Chrome is yet another top notch 3 year old from the Bob Baffert barn. Although he’s bred to improve as the distances increase, he will be going two turns for the first time and because of his connections, he will be over bet in this.

Santa Anita – Race 9
Grade II Strub Stakes
$200,000
For Four Year Olds
1 1/8 miles on Pro-Ride
7:38 pm EST
Eagle Poise goes from trainer Brian Lynch to trainer Bill Mott. The Woodbine shipper was last seen losing by a single length to the terrific Cloudy’s Knight. He gets the rail where jockey Julien Leparoux can save some ground and has been training very well on the Pro-Ride surface. Eagle Poise’s record of 3-3 out of 6 races on all weather surfaces makes him a viable candidate for win honors in the Strub. Misremembered went off the favorite in the Malibu and finished 2 nd. Horseplayers shouldn’t hold that against him because nobody was going to catch Man One Rifle on that day. Misremembered has had success at the 1 1/8 th mile distance and could win the Strub with a top effort. Heavenly Wind comes over from Turf Paradise where it has finished 1 st twice and 2 nd once out of 4 lifetime races. The gelding goes to the barn of Ron Hess. Heavenly Wind should give a good accounting of itself in the Strub and will offer value in the exotics.
