Breeders’ Cup Power Rankings - Major Changes in Sprint Division

Bookmark and Share by D.S. Williamson

A lot has changed in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint Division. Midnight Lute, last year’s winner of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, looked less than stellar win losing in the Bing Crosby over Del Mar’s Polytrack two weeks ago.

Online horse betting fans to say the least.

But that’s not the biggest news regarding the Breeders’ Cup Sprint Division. The bigger news involves the top sprinter on the east coast, maybe in the country, Benny the Bull. The Bull was retired this past week because of a slight injury. Could the Bull return and run another day? Of course, but why risk it when Benny the Bull is worth millions of dollars as a stud horse?

With both Benny the Bull and Midnight Lute seemingly out of the running, the role of favoritism falls squarely on the shoulders of The Boss.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint Power Rankings

1. Street Boss online betting odds + 200 - - Street Boss is now 2 to 1 to win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. No horse is worth such underlaid odds to win the Sprint. But I can’t knock The Boss because he will be running at his home track, Santa Anita, and he’s been sensational this year. I just don’t see this guy making a bad run. Is he worth an online win wager? Probably not, but he might be a nice key horse in the exotics.

2. Divine Park online betting odds + 2000 - - Now that Divine Park will no longer try to stretch out, Curlin pummeled him in the 1 1/8th miles Woodward this past Saturday, he’s a serious threat to continue to improve and to be a force in the Sprint Division. The online wagering odds are terrific on this very classy, very adaptable, horse.

3. Bustin’ Stones online betting odds + 1600 - - The speed of the speed is always worth a look in this race. Stones had to scratch out of his last. He will need to impress in his prep race in order to keep his spot, but I have no doubt that he will. I like this guy at those online wagering odds.

4. Lucky Island online betting odds + 800 - - Island lost all chance in his last when he broke poorly from the gate. The Saratoga dirt course also isn’t conducive to late runners which is what Lucky Island became once he missed the break. I expect better next time. The 8 to 1 odds are worth taking as this is one horse that has true grit and stamina.

5. Surf Cat online betting odds + 2000 - - I’m not sure where trainer Bruce Headley will put his star horse. Surf Cat has been running longer, but it looks to me as if he would prefer to run shorter. The Cat is an excellent closer at 6 to 7 furlongs and there’s a lot of speed in this race. Like Street Boss, he is another that will be running at his home track, Santa Anita.

6. Commentator online betting odds + 800 - - If Commentator enters the Sprint, then he goes off the chalk. Nobody is faster out of the gate and nobody can carry his speed further than Commentator. But I have the feeling that he will show up in the Classic. So, I’m going to wait before dumping on him at 8 to 1.

7. Midnight Lute online betting odds + 600 - - He deserves some mentioning as he has every right to bounce back off of that poor effort, right? Actually, I think he might be done as a racehorse, but I’ve been wrong before. He was sensational in the Sprint last year. I have to include him in the Top Eight.

8. Thor’s Echo online betting odds + 4000 - - How about a semi-closer who everybody is not paying attention to that could do some serious damage on the cushion track? Thor’s Echo could definitely return to form. Yes, he hasn’t shown that he cares about running at all lately, but he didn’t before scoring in this race two years ago either. He’s worth the gamble.
