Now that there is a lull in major thoroughbred races - although there will be some great racing coming up at Santa Anita in California and Gulfstream Park in Florida in a couple of weeks - the races continue to be run at venues across America. So don’t worry, there is still plenty of action for players like us.
Now might be a great time for some of the BetUS.com Racebook players to take a look at a short list of things I recommend when looking for a horse to bet on.
Never listen to the handicappers on TV. If you haven’t noticed yet, they pick the chalk (favorite) or second choice all the time. If betting on races was that simple we would all be driving a Rolls-Royce.
Look for a race where the favorite is weak. By weak I mean weak in the betting, not on the form. Example: let’s say the favorite is 6/5 in the morning line and he is sitting at 5/2 on the tote board, to me he is a looser.
Trust the racing secretary. He is the one who knows what’s going on at the track and he makes the morning line. Think of him as the odds maker on a football game; they both know what they are doing.
So when you are thinking…hey look the favorite is 3/1, he should be 6/5. That’s great VALUE. Get that thought out of your head right away. When you get that thought, look at all the other horses who are getting bet UNDER their morning line, and if they don’t look that great on the racing form, that could be the winner.
Keep this in mind: the racing form is called “past performances”, it tells you what happened in the PAST! The money being bet on the board is what is happening today.
There is no law that says the race track has to provide you with a racing form or a handicappers’ tout sheet, but there is a law in every state that says the track MUST show you the money being bet and possible payouts - that’s the real info you need. I laugh when I go to a track or an OTB and see all the player with their head buried in the form, look up people you are missing the real info!
