Brother Derek, the favorite for this Saturday’s Run for the Roses, worked out on Monday. That’s not news, the news is he did something he never did before, he ran hard on a wet track. According to Don Alvie, a resident of Louisville and a man who knows horses as well as anyone,he told me he looked a little unsettled. That was good news to me because I’m looking for a much bigger price then you will get on him.
Here is a summation of how I see the Derby field if the track is wet:Brother Derek: He has never been in a race on an “off” track, so I’ll pass on himLawyer Ron: He has won in the slop and has Danzig as his grandsire. Danzig is one of the best “mudders” of all time, so he figures well in the rain.Barbaro: He's has won in the slop and on the grass. He has a sire named Roberto, one of the best grass and off track colts of them all.Bob and John: Won the Wood Memorial in the slop, he likes it.Private Vow: Never ran in the slop, but he has a 392 wet mark. He should be OK.Sweetnorthernsaint: Loves the slop, he won by 10 lengths in it previously.Sharp Humor: He has won in the slop at Belmont Park.Steppenwolfer: Won in the slop at Oaklawn Park.Keyed Entry: Had 2 very good races on a wet track.Cause To Believe: Loves a wet track, has won over a wet track at Golden Gate and has a 411 wet mark.Deputy Glitters: Ran twice on a wet surface and they were the worst races of his career.Jazil: Ran a big one in the slop last out in the Wood Memorial.Hope that helps you figure out who’s who come Saturday.
FURLONGS
African American jockeys have won 15 Derby’s. In fact, they won 15 of the first 28 Classics. In 1980, the NAACP erected a plaque to honor the African American jocks. It hangs in the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs. One of the jocks was Isaac Murphy. He was the first ever to win three Derbys, winning in 1884, 1890 and 1891. They were consecutive as there was no Derby in 1885-90.Willie Simms was another great African American rider, he had two derby mounts and won them both (1896, 98). He is the only black rider to win each of the Triple Crown events.
Be sure if you ever get to Churchill,to check out the museum.
