BetUS.com has these quick reminders on things to keep an eye on for the race. It’s the first leg of the Triple Crown, so whatever happens here will help determine future races as well. Without further ado, here are some things to consider when laying down some late action:

• Grab a quick weather report. Some horses are better in the slop than others, while some are excellent runners on a dry track. It’s important to know what you are dealing with beforehand.
• Posting positions are crucial. The start of a horse is not the end all of a race, particularly if they finish well. However, if a horse is a quick starter and does not start well then he is done. Starting in posts numbers 1 and 2 are the toughest lane assignments.
• Streaks coming in play a part. Some horses enter this race having not had much recent action, while others have run hard down the stretch and are really primed. You always want to go with the more seasoned horse- unless a sparsely raced horse has run some blistering times in warm-up.
• Pedigree is always looked at. Take a quick look at the trainers and jockeys of the horses. A history of winning is always a safe bet to go with.
• And so when you’ve done all this, make sure to finally select a horse! Personally, I like the way that Barbaro has slipped under the media wire. Everyone is talking about Brother Derek and Lawyer Ron, but Barbaro is not far behind and thus has some favorable odds.
