Horse Pick of the Day - Hollywood Park Race 8

It’s back to Hollywood Park on Thursday where the featured race, although interesting to watch, may not be the best betting race of the day.

It’s almost always a good idea to bet races with full fields, unless you’re trying to beat a short-priced favorite in a graded race, because full fields ensure that the money gets spread around and that the pools are large.  That should be the case in Race 8 at Hollywood Park on Thursday.

Oneforthemarch - - 5/1 morning line odds

The longer a front runner runs often times the better its chances of winning on the lead.  What happens is that once a horse can relax, it can save an incredible amount of energy and then can be very difficult to pass.  That could be the case in this race as Oneforthemarch couldn’t hang on his first time going 1 1/16th miles after securing a lead, but figures to hang on in this race.  The main reason for that is that Oneforthemarch switches to jockey Martin Garcia who is an expert at nursing a horse on the lead.  Oneforthemarch ran 6 furlongs in 1:11 in his last race.  That’s just too fast for a two year old going two turns to run.  Garcia will make sure the horse relaxes in this.  It’s going to be tough for anybody to pass him.

Bradio Station - - 3/1 morning line odds

This fella out of Royal Academy finally broke his maiden in his 5th lifetime start after bobbling shortly after the gates opened and having to go 4 wide around the second turn in his last.  That was an impressive victory by this horse and there’s no doubt that he has a shot in this.  He’s pretty much the only horse in the field that is capable of running down Oneforthemarch.  That makes him a serious player.

Straightomidnight - - 6/1 morning line odds

He’s coming out of a victory in a 6 ½ furlong race, but jockey Omar Berrio has a huge decision in this race.  If he punches early and puts Straighttomidnight on the lead with Oneforthemarch, then there’s a chance this guy will get beat up on the front end.  If he doesn’t, then Oneforthemarch could run off with this.  My gut tells me that Berrio will try to track Oneforthemarch from about 3 to 4 lengths off the pace.  Straightomidnight could make a nice ran at the top of the stretch but getting to Oneforthemarch will be tough and holding off Bradio Station won’t be easy either.  He’s a tough call for horseplayers.

Wagering Strategy

Oneforthemarch figures to take the lead early and then run off with this.  If they challenge him, Garcia is a good enough jockey to get him to relax just off of the lead.  Either way, the race sets up for him.

Bradio Station is a legitimate contender. So, besides betting Oneforthemarch to win and place, I’m going to bet an exacta box with Oneforthemarch and Bradio Station.  I will also bet a lesser exacta box with Oneforthemarch and Straightomidnight.
