Just to add another problem for us Derby bettors, Mother Nature has joined in. Rain and showers are forecast for every day this week in Louisville, Kentucky, except Thursday. So throw in a muddy or sloppy track to the already toughest Derby to handicap in recent years, and we could again see big numbers on the tote board. That’s great for me, as I will be looking for a price horse.

Just to keep you updated on the last few days of workouts, here are the latest and final works for most of the entries.

-Retired Hall of Fame jock Angel Cordero Jr. worked Jazil 5 Furlongs in 100.4, and then Angel jumped on Keyed Entry and went 6F in 112.4.

-Bluegrass Cat, who will be ridden in the Derby by Ramon Dominguez, who replaces the injured J.R. Velazquez, went 4F in 50.4.

-Speedball Sinister Minister had his final work, he went 5F in 100.1.

-Barbaro, who loves a wet track, worked 4F in 46 flat.

-Lawyer Ron had a bullet work of 5F in 58.4.

For those of you who may not know, a bullet work is the fastest work of the day at that distance, in this case 5 furlongs.

Sixteen of the possible 20 starters are on the grounds (as of Sunday) at Churchill. All others should be there by Tuesday.

Some Derby notes
-4 of the last 5 winning jocks will NOT be in the Derby this year. That is a real rarity.

-Also absent this year are Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, and the ever- popular New Yorker Nick Zito.

-Sweetnorthernsaint is the only gelding in this year’s Derby. In all, 8 geldings have won the race, three fillies have won it and the other 120 times a colt has won.

-The Churchill track is a speed- favoring track when it is wet, so my pick may change if the conditions are other then fast. As of now, I’m looking at 2 horses who can stay close to the pace and then finish. I don’t want to be too far back, but I don’t want the lead either. Someone who can stalk close and finish will win this year.

I’ll have another update on track conditions and odds later this week.
