Off Track Horse Race Betting – Kid to Watch

Bookmark and Share by Brian Mulligan

With a paucity of talented young riders in Southern California at the present time, horse race betting fan should be on the look out for a new face that just may make some waves this summer.

His name is Michael Martinez and he hails from a hotbed of great jockeys, Panana.

One of the best things he has going for him is his cousin, Alex Solis, the dean of riders on the circuit.

Almost a cool 22 years of age, Martinez has some work to do in this country to learn the language and the customs of being a professional on this circuit but he’s already won 40 races in his native land and will get to learn from one of the best journeyman riders in the country.

Solis came to this country when he was a teenager and he can help with the growing pains of the rider, who will be living with Solis in Glendora.

Martinez attended one of the most renowned jockey schools in the world in his native land and with help from the cousin, he could have a big impact on the circuit during the Del Mar meet.

Expect him to use his patience, as that’s one of Solis’s best traits and also expect him to be embraced by some big barns.

Another thing horse bettors should know about Martinez is that he has a good agent calling the shots. Alex Procel Crowley, who had the underrated pilot Felipe Martinez, no relation, for years, will guide the youngster’s mounts.

Alex also handled Isaias Enriquez for years and helped that rider make great strides with horseman Mike Harrington.

Between that association, and the relationship Crowley has with the Doug O’Neill barn, expect young Mr. Martinez to land some live mounts right off the bat.

Another up and coming rider that horse bettors should look to in the future is Brandon Meier. The son of long-time rider Randall Meier, the kid had a dream start to his riding career winning with his very first mount at Chicago’s Arlington Park by over 4 lengths.

The fact that he has already gained acceptance of the king of the circuit, Wayne Catalano, speaks volumes.

The first win did not come all that easily. The runner, Houseboat, acted up at the gate and popped Meier in the jaw. It required fixing 4 fractured teeth and a nasty root canal.

Don’t expect a little setback like that to thwart Meier. Horse betting faithful should know that the kid has been around the game forever and he’s tough.

Meier popped with 10 of his first 45 mounts for a cool 22% which was tops on the circuit to all except the leading pilot Rene Douglas and the veteran Earle Fires, who was aboard 16 winners from his first 36 mounts.

The kid is great out of the gate and horse bettors in Chicago must factor in his ability to get runners out of the gate in relation to how that will affect the running of a race.

He also is fearless, as he showed last weekend when a 7-1 he was aboard, collided with the rail, but was quickly straightened by the kid to complete the exacta.

Timing is everything in life and astute off track betting enthusiasts should know that these two kids have picked the perfect time to start their careers.
