Weekend Stakes Action - Grade II New York Handicap & Colonial Turf Cup Stakes

Bookmark and Share by D.S Willimson

Two three-year olds that were absolutely man-handled by Kentucky Derby, Adriano and Court Vision, return to action in this Saturday’s Colonial Turf Cup Stakes.

But before that is the Grade II New York Handicap at Belmont Park. Long-shot opportunities abound in each race for online racebook fans.

Let’s get to it!

Belmont Park Race 9

Grade II New York Handicap

$250,000

For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Up

1 ¼ miles on the turf

Mauralakana will no doubt be the chalk, but this field has four other talented misses entered. Each one has a chance to take Mauralakana down. In particular I like the looks, on paper, of the Bill Mott trained Dynaforce. Dynaforce looks like a force to be reckoned with starting for the first time in the United States, getting the coveted rail position where she can remain covered up until the top of the lane and the services of John Velasquez. I’m making an online wager on her to upset Mauralakana. For second, I’m going to snub Mauralakana again and go with Hostess. Hostess had a terrible trip in her last but did beat Mauralakana two races ago. She’s a quality five year old mare who on her best game could challenge for the win. Mauralakana is the obvious play for show even though, because of this short field, show betting might not be available. She goes off at 1 to 2 in this race which means that unless you feel ultra-sure that she’s going to win, you’re better off trying to beat her.

1. Dynaforce

2. Hostess

3. Mauralakana

Grade III Colonial Turf Cup

$600,000

For Three Year Olds

1 3/16th miles outer turf

This is without a doubt the best stakes race of the weekend. I love to take a look at a long-shot that could upset some better known three-year olds coming off of a whuppin’ in the Kentucky Derby. It happens every year. Horses that ran in the Kentucky Derby are inevitably overbet because of name recognition. That provides real online racebook fans with some nice overlays. The overlay in this race, I hope, will be the James Toner trained Sailor’s Cap. Sailor’s Cap finished second in his last race to Tiz Déjà Vu. He beat Nistles Crunch in that race and figures to improve off of the short lay-off. The only issue is that outside draw, but this field lacks a true turf horse with the ability to lie close to the pace. Sailor’s Cap to win. For second, Boss Lafitte looks like a solid play. He was terrific in his last race and only needs to hold form in order to challenge for the win. The problem will Boss Lafitte is that he tends to run a great race and then run poorly right after. He’s coming up to his “poor” race. Hopefully, he can turn that trend around. Court Vision for trainer Bill Mott will take a lot of action and rightfully so. The $350,000 buy son of Gulch should no doubt like the turf more then the dirt he’s been running on. I’ll tab Court Vision for third in this contested affair.

1. Sailor’s Cap

2. Boss Lafitte

3. Court Vision

Good luck!
