Bet on Horse Racing - WALK OF FAME

Bookmark and Share by Brian Mulligan

Stakes action this weekend at Hollywood Park is not exactly the walk of fame but with the 9-furlong Cinema Handicap kicking off the action Saturday, there may be a few stars in the stands and on the playing field.

Let’s get a head start on how we can make some cash.

A total of 15 made the initial nomination list and there are some that will show up and make some noise.

It may just start and end with the Ben Cecil student Worldly. He will try to become the first horse in 11 years to post the Will Rogers/Cinema double and his teacher gave an update on his well being on the Hollypark site the other day.

Cecil: “He won the first time out in this country at a mile and eighth so I don’t think the distance will be a problem. We scoped him after his last race, and he had quite a bit of mucus, but it’s under control now. He will work 6-furlongs tomorrow.”

That work was the third best on the tab at 6 furlongs and was clocked in 1:13.40.

Any kind of a set back, as slight as mucus, is not a good thing, but this is a nice horse. He has only run one off race and that was on a good course at Wolverhampton.

One of his rivals next time will be the guy that just chased him home, Mayor Bozarth. Trained by Bobby Frankel, he was getting to the winner in his last and with a race over the course, has every chance to improve.

La Puente Stakes winner Golden Balls is also pointing for the Grade 3 event. This son of Danehill likes to cut it close even on his best day but he has a nice turn of late foot and will be making only his second start since October Saturday so he has every right to run better.

Neil Drysdale could be represented by the pair of Gweebarra and Streets Ahead. Drysdale, a world-class trainer, just watched Gweebarra win his U.S. debut sprinting on this course with a 79 Beyer while his other runner, Streets Ahead, came out slowly in his stateside bow and was no factor at Anita and this will also be his first chance at 9 furlongs.

Another runner that is eyeing the stakes is Mr. Eddie Boy, who is unbeaten in his two starts on grass but this is a far cry from taking a $75K Golden Gate Stakes. Trainer Bob Hess Sr. has forgotten more about this sport than many on the backstretch.

At post time look for a runner that has positional speed and that will at least give him a puncher’s chance but you have to ultimately respect Bobby Frankel.

On Sunday, older fillies and mares will be seeking the top portion of a $75,000 pot in the Valkyr Stakes at 6 furlongs.

The one to beat is win machine Vaca City Flyer, who if she keeps it up will be claim of the year material. The miss has banked over $400,000 taking 14 of 27, just ran 2nd in a $52,000 stakes and has come a long way since running for a $12.5K claiming tag.

Dreams, that is what this game is all about.
