National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his column. He will feature at least one Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Don't miss Wednesday's report where Michael will keep you up to date with track bias reports for the major circuits.
Well, I guess we can say I missed hitting the Preakness Stakes only to get beaten by Curlin.
Rags to Riches was my top pick in the Belmont Stakes and that worked out well, the filly returning $10.80.
The Triple Crown is history, and now we have the dogs day of summer to look forward to, which is really not too shabby. Saratoga open in July. Until then, we'll plug away, trying to pad our bankroll at Churchill and Belmont.
Featured Race of the Day:
CD Race 4 Clm $5,000 (2:45 et)
#8 Twin Talk 6/1
#5 Coping With Mike 5/1
#1 High Adventure 5/1
#9 Lifes Crown 3/1
Analysis: #8 Twin Talk dueled for the early lead and faded to finish sixth last out, regressing off a good effort two back when finishing second when coming back off a two month break. Gelding owns a solid pace profile throughout and has run fairly well over the surface in his career (16-2-3-2). Decent value if we catch most of the 6/1 ML.
#5 Coping With Mike broke poorly last out and was not much of a threat in sixth place finish as the beaten chalk. Owns back numbers that are a good fit and won 4 of 109 starts last year. Was claimed out of his last start by Pincins barn that is showing a 1 for 12 mark first off the claim.
Race rating: $$$
Wager: #8 to win at 3/1 or better. Exacta key of #5,#8 over #1,#5,#8,#9.
Pick 4 of the Day: Churchill Downs Late Pick 4:
Starting in Race 6: $1: 2,9 / 1,4,5 / 2,4,5,12 / 10,12 = $48
CD Race 6 Clm $15,000N2L (3:45 et)
#9 Nip It, #2 Bright Sunshine
#9 Nip It regressed last out second off the bench after finishing a game second two back when coming back off a six month layoff. Filly is reunited with Leparoux who was aboard two back when coming back off the sidelines. Filly looks real tough here if she runs back to her effort two back. #2 Bright Sunshine pressed the early pace and weakened in the stretch while drifting out and finished sixth against $30K non winners of two. Cuts back to a sprint for his third start off the bench and
drops into a easier spot here.
CD Race 7 Clm $40,000 (4:15 et)
#1 Dr. Schwartz / #1a Captain Malory, #5 Monstar, #4 Road Show
#1 Dr. Schwartz exits a $75K claimer where the colt checked in a non threatening fifth. The winner of the race was Danieltwon, who came back to beat $80K optional claimers in his next outing here on Sunday. This guy reeled off three straight wins after Autrey claimed this guy for $20K back in November of '06. Easiest spot this guy has faced since getting taken by the barn. #5 Monstar dueled for the early lead and weakened to finish ninth last out for a $40K tag on turf although he was beaten just 2 1/2 lengths for the top spot. Maker having a strong meeting, winning at a 29% clip and this guy has done his best running on the main track and is 4 for 9 over the surface here.
CD Race 8 Alw $50,000N1X (4:46 et)
#4 Thunder One, #2 Pimm's O'Clock, #12 Tocqueville, #5 Loushe
#4 Thunder One tries grass for the first time here and while the colt is light in the pedigree department for the lawn the colt comes in here with a game second against $30K foes after getting off to a lousy start. Was claimed out of the race by Autrey barn that is 28% winners first off the claim. Has been working quickly in the mornings for his first start for the new connections. #2 Pimm's O'Clock has a win and a couple of seconds in seven starts on grass in his career. Did not fire his best last out in fifth place finish on the main track after beating $30K non winners of two in his previous start. Reunited with Lanerie who was aboard for his win two back.
CD Race 9 Clm $5,000 (5:17 et)
#10 Lovetheprospect, #12 So Hot
#10 Lovetheprospect has been beaten by double digit lengths in each of her last four starts and drops in for a $5K tag here after getting claimed two back for $7.5K by former Asmussen assistant John Fahey. Stretches out to a mile here while facing easier company and that might be enough to wake her up. Barn is 3 for 11 moving runners from sprint to route. #12 So Hot was not a threat last out against $120K foes and now makes her first start for Autrey barn that is 28% winners first off the claim. Does have a pair of wins over the main track here in seven trips.
Longshot Plays of the Day:
These are some price plays that should be watched today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
