Kentucky Derby Pick 3 - $2 Bet get you $120

Race-day: 5/2/2009
First Leg of the Pick 3: 3:57 pm est.
One of the advantages for Kentucky Derby Day is that Churchill Downs offers rolling Pick 3’s. A rolling Pick 3 is a wager where the first leg of the Pick 3 can be on any race on the card. The Pick 3 “rolls” to the next two races.
So, if some horseplayers want to start their Pick 3 in race 7, no problem. The next two legs would be races 8 and 9. If some other horseplayers want to start their Pick 3 in race 8, no issue. The next two legs would be races 9 and 10.
The Pick 3 that I have singled out as being the best on the Kentucky Derby Day card starts in Race 9, the Humana Distaff, and ends in Race 11, the Kentucky Derby.
Pick 3 of the Day:
Leg A: Humana Distaff
3 – Informed, Decision - - The 9/5 chalk has to be included because she’s won her last three races and will be in the garden spot during this.
5 – Secret Gypsy - - The 7/2 shot has won her last three races as well but was beat down by Informed Decision the only time the two met. She’s a definite use, though, because the track might be fast on Derby Day and she’s a great frontrunner.
9 – Game Face - - At 2 to 1, this Todd Pletcher trainee is a definite underlay to win the Humana Distaff, but she’s a must use in the Pick 3 because she gets Garrett Gomez and her style is to lay close to the pace but not take the lead until necessary.
Leg B: Woodford Reserve Turf Classic
1 – Artiste Royale - - The classy Neil Drysdale trainee is 6/1 on the morning line, gets jockey Alan Garcia and the rail, and can close as well as any horse in the field.
4 – Court Vision - - The 7/2 son of Vision and Verse has definitely found a home on turf after winning the Grade I Hollywood Derby on the lawn. Like Artiste Royale, he’s a terrific closer.
6 – Einstein - - While Court Vision and Artiste Royale are closers, Einstein is a presser. The 2/1 chalk won the Grade I Turf Classic on the lawn at Churchill Downs. So, he’ll like the sod and he runs well fresh.
7 – Cowboy Cal - - If Cowboy Cal goes off at his 5/1 morning line odds, then he would be an overlay in this race. He’s as fast as any horse in here and should lie off of Thorn Song before making a move for the lead at the top of the stretch.
Leg C: Kentucky Derby
16 – Pioneerof the Nile - - The Bob Baffert trainee has been spectacular all year and has trained well at Churchill Downs. He’s a must use as the 4/1 second choice in the Derby.
10 – Regal Ransom - - At morning line odds of 30/1, the potential lone speed in the Kentucky Derby has to be part of any Pick 3 ticket.
13 – I Want Revenge - - The 3/1 chalk might be an underlay to win the Kentucky Derby, but he’s a definite use in the Pick 3. His 4 furlong work in anticipation of the big day was spectacular.
19 – Desert Party - - What if Godolphin is right and Desert Party is really that good? Then, horseplayers will be happy that they have him on their Pick 3 tickets!
15 – Dunkirk - - He’s going against history and he’s running for Todd Pletcher who is 0 for 21 in the Kentucky Derby. But he’s almost as fast as I Want Revenge which means he has a shot.
Total Pick 3 Cost for a $2 bet: $120
