National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his column. He will feature at least one Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Don't miss Wednesday's report, where Michael will keep you up to date with track bias reports for the major circuits.
Twin Talk got home first as my top pick in Wednesday's featured race of the day, returning $9.00 for the win. We failed to knock down the exacta in the race. Our Pick 4 ticket got off to a good start with Bright Sunshine ($19.80), but we got knocked out in the second leg.
For Thursday we'll head out to New York for today's featured race of the day. Then we'll head out to Churchill Downs for our Pick 4 ticket, which is a $48 investment. Our longshot list is on the light side, let's hope that does not mean we are in for a chalky day.
Featured Race of the Day:
BEL Race 6 Clm $14,000 (3:36 et)
#9 Sir Jackie 4/1
#6 Rob's Boy Mat 9/2
#4 For Gill 3/1
#2 Mighty Gulch 7/2
Analysis: #9 Sir Jackie cuts back from a route for Reynolds barn that is 20% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from route to sprint. Had a clear lead heading for home but could not hold off the winner, coming up a head shy of the top spot. Gets a key jock upgrade from Rojas to Edgar.
#6 Rob's Boy Mat dueled for the early lead from the outside and weakened to finish seventh last out against state bred Alw-2 optional claimers. The winner of the race was Stonewood, who came back to beat Alw-2 state breds in his next outing on 6/8. Looks like the right spot here dropping in for a $14K tag and this guy also gets a upgrade in jocks. Race rating: $$$
Wager: #9 to win at 5/2 or better. Exacta key of #6,#9 over #2,#4,#6,#9.
Pick 4 of the Day: Churchill Downs Late Pick 4:
Starting in Race 6: $1: 1,3,6 / 1,8 / 2,3 / 3,4,5,10 = $48
CD Race 6 Md $30,000 (3:45 et)
#1 Ashima, #6 Snuggler, #3 Saint Jamie
#1 Ashima did not fire last out, breaking fro the 12 post and breaking outward and just never getting into it at Arlington over the polytrack against maiden special weight company. Two back off a two month break the filly made a mild late rally to finish fourth at Keeneland. The winner of that race was Girls Pearls, who came back to win her next three starts including a $54K stake on 6/9 at Prairie Meadows. Drops back in for a tag here for Dollase barn that is 4 for 9 at the meeting.
CD Race 7 Alw $10,000s (4:15 et)
#8 Que Candy, #1 Miami Sunrise
#8 Que Candy was a sharp winner last out against $5K starter allowance foes for his second win in a row and looks sharp enough to step into this tougher spot and win right back. A perfect 2 for 2 over the main track here and has won 14 times in his career. Dopes go from one turn to two but has shown an ability to get the D/S in his career. In good hands with Fahey. #1 Miami Sunrise ships in from Mountaineer where last out the gelding checked in third against Alw-2 foes. Makes his second start off the claim by Maker barn that has been on a roll at the meeting, hitting at a 29% clip overall.
CD Race 8 Alw $50,000N1X (4:46 et)
#3 Awesome Ashley, #2 Inside Passage
#3 Awesome Ashley dueled for the early lead and could not go with the winner late in runner up finish. The winner of the race was Girls Pearls, who came back to win a $54K stake in her next outing at Prairie Meadows. Filly owns a solid pace profile throughout and she looks to be sitting on a good effort here in her third start of her current form cycle. #2 Inside Passage faces winners for the first time here coming off a sharp maiden score last out in her third career start. The runner up in the race was Marina Ballerina, a next out grad on 6/1 here.
CD Race 9 Alw $52,500N2X (5:17 et)
#3 Mount Wilton, #10 Yate's Black Cat, #5 Cat Shaker, #4 Friar
#3 Mount Wilton makes his turf debut here and while his turf pedigree is on the light side, he ha shown some promise in his three career starts. He won his first two career outings and then may have come back too quick last out when facing this level for the first time, checking in third. In good hands with Reinstedler barn that is 4 for 13 (with a +ROI) moving runners from dirt to turf. Decent value if we see close to the 10/1 ML. #10 Yate's Black Cat hopped at the start and finished with some interest in a runner up finish last out here going a mile. This guy has been competitive against tougher and passed his first allowance condition over the grass here. Looks tougher here but at a short price.
Longshot Plays of the Day:
These are some price plays that should be watched today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
BEL R1: #7 Wheelit 12/1
BEL R7: #12 Pulpiteer 20/1
BEL R8: #4 Freedom Ridge 10/1
BEL R9: #2 Gypsy Gale 20/1
CD R5: #3 Creek Bay 8/1
